Most of the anime include subjective matters in the show to explore the core of some characters or events and split personality syndrome is one of them. A split personality refers to dissociative identity disorder (DID), a mental disorder where a person has two or more distinct personalities. The thoughts, actions, and behaviors of each personality may be completely different. And, many series explores mental illness through anime characters with a split personality.

Anime characters with multiple personalities may all sport clashing personas, but each one gains them differently. Often, this situation occurs due to the post-traumatic stress or anxiety caused to the characters in the childhood and in order to cope with it they construct a new side of themselves. However, not every single character with a split personality properly depicts the real struggles of mental illness.

And, in today’s article, we’ll take a look at some of the anime characters with split personality syndrome where they show more than one side of themselves. So, without any further ado let’s get started.

10. Cavendish (One Piece)

Cavendish of the White Horse, also known as the “Pirate Prince”, is a famous Super Rookie who joined as a gladiator at the Corrida Colosseum to compete for the Mera Mera no Mi. Although Cavendish appears to be a very attractive and charming person, he also suffers from a split personality, changing into a bloodthirsty lunatic known as Hakuba.

When possessed by his alter ego, Hakuba, his face slightly changes and gets a demonic appearance. He is the twisted and homicidal split personality of Cavendish that only appears when he falls asleep. Unlike Cavendish’s gentlemanly and amicable self, Hakuba is a bloodthirsty murderer who kills anyone and anything in his path without remorse or hesitation.

9. Shinobu Sensui (Yu Yu Hakusho)

In the entirety of Yu Yu Hakusho, it has portrayed its antagonists as complex, strange and multi-faceted individuals. And, Shinobu Sensui can be said to be the most fascinating villain out of them. As a Spirit Detective, he upheld a strict sense of justice however, his ideals were shattered after witnessing the torture of several demons for the sake of humans’ sick pleasure.

This left a deep impact on Sensui’s personality and his disillusion sent him on a murderous rampage. As a result, Sensui developed six different personalities other than himself as a coping mechanism for his broken ideals. Each aspect of his personality showcases a different side of himself, ranging from the captivating Minoru to the sadistic Kazuya. The primary personality, “Shinobu” acts like a glue that holds all his other persona together.

8. Diavolo & Doppio (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

Diavolo is a unique case of anime characters with a split personality, in that not only his mind but also his body changes, depending on the dominant personality. If Diavolo has an adult body and face, Doppio is leaner and has a teenage face. Doppio and Diavolo are two separate souls inhabiting the same body.

They have very different appearances, but that’s meant to be a bizarre factor. Diavolo also shares the powers of his King Crimson stand with his other persona, Doppio. Doppio’s way of talking to his second personality (who he considers his boss) is through random objects. It’s concluded that they’re the same person with a mental disorder.

7. Reiner Braun (Attack On Titan)

Reiner Braun is an extremely captivating character in the realm of Attack On Titan who underwent a drastic change over the entirety of the series. But, what’s more, intriguing about Reiner is his split personality. He seems to suffer from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) in which he creates an alternate personality of his own for different reasons.

Reiner has two distinct personalities: the “warrior” who is rough, aggressive and determined and the “soldier” who is selfless, loyal, and righteous. At many moments, he had been seen struggling with his distinctive persona as well and it is supposed to be caused by the warrior mentality bestowed upon him at the young age of 12.

6. Zetsu (Naruto Shippuden)

Zetsu is a member of the Akatsuki Clan who is also categorized in the anime characters with split personality syndrome. Despite having opposite personalities, the two halves of Zetsu still function as one unit. Each side of his face divides into White and Black Zetsu and works accordingly when necessary. White Zetsu is the playful, talkative right side who appears dim-witted but is obedient and loyal.

He is characterized by a higher-pitched and softer voice. On the other hand, Black Zetsu has a deeper voice and is more serious and sharp-tongued. He’s intolerant of nonsense and holds no allegiance to anyone who obstructs Madara’s goal. Although both of Zetsu’s sides are very obedient to the Akatsuki, Black Zetsu occasionally disagrees with White Zetsu.

5. Toko Fukawa (Danganronpa)

Toko Fukawa is one of the important characters in the deadly game of Danganronpa. At first look, she seemed to be a shy fidgety girl who usually assumes the worst in everything resulting in people pulling away from her. But, as soon as the story progressed the true colours of Toko came out.

This bizarre girl doesn’t only suffer from dissociative identity disorder, she also has a persecution complex. Toko’s dark alternative self comes with the name Genocide Jack, who is quite a wild character. Genocide Jack is more outspoken and very quite outrageous. The real reason behind his personality switch isn’t clear but maybe she adopted a cautious exterior due to being a victim of bullying.

4. Zenitsu Agatsuma (Demon Slayer)

Zenitsu has two sides to his character – one is coward and hilarious, second is fierce & aggressive like thunder. His personality contrasts his two sides as he becomes a completely different person when he goes into sleep mode. Speaking about Zenitsu’s powers, he becomes more level-headed than Tanjiro and Inosuke.

Zenitsu is like a crybaby when he begs about saving his life but as soon as he gets unconscious he demonstrates the “thunder god” mode of his personality. He develops a more serious side when he’s unconscious, bringing out his true strength. Even though he lives in constant fear of being killed, he earns him a spot as a Demon Slayer.

3. Twice (My Hero Academia)

League of Villains in My Hero Academia is made up of a bunch of eccentric and lively personas including the dual personality character, Twice. When he’s outside of his villain costume and mask, he acts like a great comedian, often cracking jokes with the other League of Villains members. But, as soon as he dons his mask, his manic personality takes over.

His different personalities result from a need for connection. Each of these personalities is a “friend” he created to combat his loneliness and feel comfortable in his skin. Joining the League of Villains also helps him cope with his loneliness because the other members accept him and his multiple personalities, especially his love interest Toga Himiko.

2. Alluka Zoldyck (Hunter x Hunter)

The strange world of Hunter x Hunter is deemed to be the origin of a different persona and it never stops astonishing fans with its character’s introduction. Alluka Zoldyck, the younger sister of Killua, was also portrayed as a cute little girl until the audience witnessed her weird personality shift. Unlike other Zoldyck children, Alluka wasn’t smart enough but she possessed god-like abilities.

Alluka in her strange altered personality, Nanika makes any wish possible if a series of set rules are followed in a sequence. Her powers are very fascinating as it does not abide by the laws of Nen. The mechanism of Nanika’s abilities is quite difficult to elaborate however, it is considered to be limitless.

Certainly, it is implied that Nanika’s ability is an advanced version of Nen and she can bring forth her powers by a sudden shift in her personality. Although, her powers are quite dangerous and have proven to be risky many times but, that doesn’t alter the fact that she’s a strong opponent in her split personality.

As captain of the Teikō Junior High basketball team, Akashi led the team to consecutive victories and later went on to be known as the Generation of Miracles. Seijuro’s presence appears unassuming at first, despite his status as the fearless anime leader, but his intimidating aura slowly seeps out. He’s calm and collected, running his team like a well-oiled machine.

However, his split personality is a more twisted and controlling version. Seijuro’s left eye changes from red to orange, and he displays more arrogance and a severe “winners only” mentality. He’s less tolerant of anyone who looks down on or attempts to defy him and he uses his commanding aura to bring an opponent to their feet.
