In the world of the anime and manga industry, it is rarely seen that a female manga artist comes at the top of the chain. Most of the popular anime series are written by male authors. One Piece, Naruto, AOT, Jujutsu Kaisen, all these notable manga’s are from male artists. And, there is no end to this list. But, what about anime by female manga artists?

Well, women are mostly don’t get the credit that they deserve to be and the same goes for the female mangaka. Their work always gets suppressed amid some big names and don’t get that much exposure as they should have.

So, considering this fact, in this article we have come up with a list of some notable anime by female manga writers that established their name in the best manga works of all time.

Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Hiromu Arakawa is best known for the iconic manga series, Fullmetal Alchemist. The series changed the perspective of Shonen category anime and revolutionized the anime industry by its well-written plot, dominating female characters and peaceful ending.

It was all possible because of Hiromu Arakawa’s excellence and the way she expressed her ideas through her manga. Her other manga, Silver Spoon is also very popular and she has won two Shogakukan Manga Awards for her brilliant work.

Her amazing work, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is still the most liked anime on MAL even after 12 years of its initial release.

Kazume Kato (Blue Exorcist)

Kazume Kato is the manga author of the popular dark fantasy anime series, Blue Exorcist. Her first manga was a one-shot titled ‘Boku to Usagi’ and after the completion of it, she decided to work on demon and exorcist elements, as a result, Blue Exorcist came into existence.

In an interview she admitted, how Kentaro Miura’s Berserk influenced her work a lot. According to Kazume-san, the 2005 film The Brothers Grimm inspired her to make a series like Blue Exorcist.

Blue Exorcist manga is currently on hiatus, as Kazume Kato is working on some other project, and it will come back again in April 2022.

Yoshitoki Oima (A Silent Voice)

Another female manga writer who made the audience emotional with her best creation, A Silent Voice. Through the impactful way of storytelling and heartwarming plot, Yoshitoki Oima garnered praise from many anime fans.

Yoshitoki Oima knows the way to a person’s heart and she had proved it many times through her sensitive work. Currently, Yoshitoki-san is working on another manga series, To Your Eternity which is also a well-deserved series.

In 2019, To Your Eternity won the Best Kodansha Manga Award in the Shonen category and recently it got adapted into an anime as well.

Katsura Hoshino (D.Gray-man)

Katsura Hoshino is well-known for her amazing artwork and visually appealing characters in any of her series. Many fans and writers have praised Hoshino-san for her extraordinary artwork. Some of them even find it difficult to follow the fight scenes drawn in the manga.

Katsura Hoshino’s popular work is D.Gray-man which began serializing way back in 2004. Other than being a manga artist, she designed characters for the 2013 Sunrise and Valvrave the Liberator anime thus, making it her first original work on an anime.

Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha)

Rumiko Takahashi is one of Japan’s wealthiest manga writers and her works are recognised around every corner of the world. She is best known for the classic manga series, Inuyasha which was a hit show in the 2000s.

More than 200 million copies of her original work are in circulation right now, which includes some of her best series like Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha.

For her great contribution towards art, in 2020, the Japanese government awarded Takahashi-san the Medal with Purple Ribbon.

Yana Toboso (Black Butler)

Dark shonen manga, Black Butler is the most notable work of Yana Toboso. Her clean illustrations and classy character designs make the art appealing to the audience. In recent times, Black Butler is popular among many fans especially the female one’s.

Black Butler is a manga about a 12-year-old orphan boy, Ciel Phantomhive who sets on a journey, with a handsome butler Sebastian, to find the real culprits behind his parent’s death. The manga is more interesting than the anime so you can choose according to your own preference.

Naoko Takeuchi (Sailor Moon)

Naoko Takeuchi is the creator of the vintage all-girl manga series, Sailor Moon. A superhero series featuring the girls in the lead cast. Sailor Moon is one of the popular manga series of all time, even popstar Dua Lipa added its theme in her latest music video.

It is rare to find a dark series with a unique plot made by a female manga artist. But, Q Hayashida proved it wrong by her well-known manga, Dorohedoro. It began serializing in 2000 and features a dark theme with a virtual world.

Q Hayashida made her debut with Maken X Another which was a manga adaptation of a 1999 video game, Maken X. Her notable work, Dorohedoro went through a lot of publications but, she finally completed it in 2018.

An anime adaptation of Dorohedoro was also premiered on Netflix in 2020 produced by Studio MAPPA.

Yuki Urushibara (Mushishi)

Yuki Urushibara is best known for her brilliant manga series, Mushishi. Through her incredible art style, she points out the real-life problems which are not seen to be lifted that much and Mushishi is a perfect example of that.

For Mushishi, she received Excellence Prize For Manga at the 2003 Japan Media Arts Festival and in 2006, she won the Kodansha Manga Award for the general manga category.

Akane Shimizu (Cells At Work!)

Akane Shimizu is the author of the popular anime series, Cells At Work! Illustrating the functionality of the human body through manga is almost unimaginable but Shimizu-san did this job perfectly.

By Cells At Work!, she demonstrated every aspect of the human body and how cells work in the system, adding some funny elements as well to make it more interesting for others.

There isn’t much information about Akane Shimizu as she never came into public still, her work is recognised by many anime fans.
