Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece has set sail with a bang, bringing the beloved world of Eiichiro Oda’s manga and anime to life in a new and exciting format. While the series faithfully adapts the source material, it also delights fans with hidden gems and easter eggs that nod to the original story.
These easter eggs celebrate the essence of what makes One Piece an enduring and beloved franchise. So, if you’re rewatching or starting the series for the first time, keep your eyes peeled for these 10 One Piece Live Action easter eggs you might have missed.
10. Important Figures At Roger’s Execution Ground
One Piece Live Action starts with the most important event of the series that led to the “Great Pirate Era”, Roger’s Execution. To witness the scene, many pirates and marine members are present at the execution ground out of which the most notable ones are – Mihawk, Shanks, and Dragon.
These soon-to-be-important figures on the Grand Line are going to play a vital role in the major story arcs of One Piece. But what comes as much of a surprise is Garp’s presence during Roger’s execution in the live-action, as it’s not according to the source material. Keep it in mind, maybe it’ll make sense later on.
9. Wanted Posters
When Luffy and Koby arrive at the Marines base in Shells Town, there’s a bounty wall highlighted in the live-action series. As the camera moves away, there can be seen the wanted posters of some of the major villains and characters from the future arcs of the original manga.
Through the bounty wall, Netflix has tried to introduce the future troublemakers for Luffy, which includes Cavendish (Dressrosa arc), Bellamy (Jaya arc), and Foxy. The pirates’ wanted posters teased in the live-action give solid proof of their involvement in the later seasons of One Piece Live Action.
8. Binks’ Sake
In the first episode of live-action, a flashback tracks young Luffy and his childhood idolization Red-Haired Shanks meet-up. This sequence then culminates in a scene where Shanks stitches Luffy’s wound after he cuts his own face with a knife in an attempt to prove his worthiness.
In the background of the scene can be heard an instrumental version of a song playing. The old pirate song which is being played is “Binks’ Sake”, and longtime fans can easily recognize it as the song that skeleton musician Brook is always singing.
7. Baroque Works & Mr. 7
“Pirate Hunter” Roronoa Zoro’s first battle in the live-action is with Baroque Works agent Mr. 7 who comes to scout him. In the original manga and anime, this event hasn’t been scripted however it’s much later mentioned in the series by Zoro himself when he faces off Mr. 1 in Alabasta.
Baroque Works is a criminal syndicate created by the Warlord Crocodile and its participation in the Alabasta Saga is very crucial from the story’s point of view. Their early introduction in the live-action hints at their antagonistic role in the later half of the show if it ever happens.
6. Nami’s Bo Staff
During the confrontation at Shells Town with Marines, Nami uses a modified version of Bo staff which seems a little familiar. For the newcomers, it may look normal but it isn’t because the weapon employed by Nami is recognized as “Clima-Tact” and it comes way ahead in the original series.
Clima-Tact makes its first appearance when the Straw Hats arrives in Alabasta and it’s designed by Usopp under Nami’s request. He models it after Nami’s signature weapon with some extraordinary features like adjustable length, as seen in the live-action.
5. Reverse Mountain
Reverse Mountain is an entrance route to the Grand Line and in the original story acts as the first checkpoint for the Strawhat Pirates. The sneak peek of this sea site comes during the third episode of One Piece Live Action where Nami is looking over the map and stops at a point that is the supposed entrance to Grand Line.
Reverse Mountain is an extremely tall mountain at one of the points where the four Blues meet and is located in the Red Line, on the opposite side of the world from Mary Geoise. This is the place where Luffy meets Laboon and Roger Pirates doctor, so look forward to this special One Piece Live Action easter eggs.
4. Pandaman & Vivi’s Duck
Pandaman is a joke character created by Eiichiro Oda who’s regarded as one of the most prominent easter eggs in the One Piece universe. His appearance in live-action seems to be a must and it does happen at Kaya’s mansion where his grass-like figure can be seen in her garden area.
However, on a serious note, Karoo the pet duck of Nefertari Vivi also makes a cameo on the same screen. Karoo’s grass sculpture is also sitting beside Pandaman’s and it clearly indicates the next important arc in the One Piece Live Action saga which is “Alabasta”.
3. Paintings At Baratie Restaurant
Netflix put a lot of effort into recreating the set designs similar to the original manga and the results can be seen in the exquisite set of ocean-going restaurant Baratie. The most notable thing at Baratie is the paintings hanging on the walls.
One of the paintings depicts the Royal Squid which is soon to be encountered by Luffy’s crew after entering the Grand Line. The second painting shows Island of Rare Animals and the fan favorite Gaimon who himself didn’t make it into live-action but got introduced among One Piece Live Action easter eggs.
2. Revolutionary Army
Of all the One Piece Live Action easter eggs, the early mention of the Revolutionary Army is pretty big from the perspective of the story. Their name comes off right after a bounty is placed on Monkey D. Luffy, as a news headline goes like this, “The country of Vira overtaken by Revolutionary Army”.
For those who’re unaware of Vira, it’s a small country somewhere in the Grand Line that was eventually overthrown by the Revolutionary Army after a coup d’état. The place itself hasn’t much significance, but the faction that rules it has a lot to do with the plot.
1. Smoker’s Appearance
As noted in the post-credit scenes of the live-action, a familiar figure arrives at the end and burns Luffy’s wanted poster. The figure in question is none other than Smoker the White Hunter who’s a Marine vice admiral and makes his first appearance in the Loguetown, as per the original storyline.
And if you’ve noticed, he was also present during Roger’s execution when he was a child. Although there’s not much explored about him in the live-action, his arrival by the end makes a big difference and hints at a potential One Piece Live Action Season 2 in the coming years.
