Since 1999, the One Piece anime TV series has been airing for over two decades. Throughout its long run, many iconic talents from the Japanese voice acting industry have contributed to the show, some of whom are still part of the cast today. However, as time passes, the beloved voice cast is aging, and it appears that another legendary figure from the franchise might soon bid farewell to fans.
Shuichi Ikeda, the original voice actor for “Red-Haired” Shanks, recently announced his retirement from the iconic role of Char Aznable in the Gundam franchise. Ikeda first joined the series as Char in 1979 and has been a part of it for over 50 years.
Although the exact reason for his departure has not been disclosed, it is speculated that his decision may be influenced by his advancing age, as he is now 75 years old. His exit has raised concerns within the One Piece community, with many fearing that Ikeda might also retire from voicing Shanks.
Recently, another veteran seiyuu and longtime colleague of Ikeda, Kazuki Yao, stepped down from his role as Franky, citing health concerns related to age. Subaru Kimura has since taken over as the voice of the Straw Hat Pirates’ shipwright.
As the One Piece anime progresses, more transitions in its legendary voice cast may occur, as many seiyuu associated with the series are now past their prime years. Fans are hopeful that the current cast will stay with the series until its conclusion. Meanwhile, the One Piece anime is set to resume the Egghead arc in April 2025.
