Makoto Yukimura’s magnum opus, Vinland Saga, has been running for nearly 20 years. With the series now approaching its conclusion, the author has begun reflecting on his journey and looking ahead to new storytelling horizons.
Ahead of the Angoulême International Comics Festival 2025, Vinland Saga creator Makoto Yukimura gave an interview discussing the origins of his Viking-inspired historical manga and his thoughts as the series nears its epic finale.
“I spent over twenty years on Vinland Saga, which is due to the fact that I work very slowly. I can finally see the end of it and I admit that the dominant feeling is that I will finally be able to rest”, he replied.
When asked about his future projects, the Vinland Saga creator admitted, “Right now, I don’t feel like working as much anymore. Maybe I say that because I’m a little tired. It’s possible that my state of mind will change after a period of rest.”
He continued, ” I don’t feel like diving back into a series as long as this one. As for the theme, I think I’ve covered all my desires regarding historical manga and I would rather return to science fiction. I have an idea but I don’t know yet if I’ll make it short or long, or when I’ll be able to start work on it.”
Yukimura has previously stated on X/Twitter that Vinland Saga only has a few chapters left before it officially ends. While fans will soon have to say goodbye to this legendary series, they may have something new to look forward to—if the author decides to venture into the world of sci-fi storytelling.
