Gundam Creator Slams Orb Anime

“I Don’t Rate It Highly”: Gundam Creator Slams Orb Anime

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth has been one of the most standout anime of the year so far. Airing amidst a sea of high-octane action series, its philosophical depth, historical themes, and heliocentric narrative have left a lasting impact on fans. However, it seems that wasn’t enough to impress Gundam creator.

In a recent anime magazine issue, Yoshiyuki Tomino, the director and creator of the widely recognized military sci-fi franchise Gundam, criticized the ongoing historical anime, stating that he doesn’t hold it in high regard.

While discussing his experience with the Gundam franchise and the mecha anime genre as a whole, Tomino briefly shifted to what he has been watching or reading lately. That’s when Orb: On the Movements of the Earth came up.

“I haven’t been watching much recent anime, but there’s one title I need to talk about—Orb: On the Movements of the Earth. Honestly, I don’t rate it highly as an anime at all,” Tomino stated in his interview, expressing frustration over what he saw as an unfaithful adaptation of the source material.

“I was annoyed that the staff had no awareness of their role in shaping culture. The concept of the manga is so strong that I want to say, ‘Don’t underestimate manga.’ Still, I never thought an artist would come along who could express such a theme so well in manga,” he added.

Throughout the interview, Tomino repeatedly downplayed the anime adaptation but praised the original manga. He pointed out that something crucial was missing from the anime, which is why he holds the manga in much higher regard.

Fans of the anime had mixed reactions to Tomino’s statement, with some dismissing his critique as outdated or jealous, while others agreed with his assessment. Many noted that his words were more of a compliment to the original material rather than an outright dig at the adaptation.

“The anime seems to be just animating the original without any real thought. I don’t feel much effort was put into making it a great anime,” one user commented. While opinions vary, some fans have embraced the series wholeheartedly, while others remain unimpressed with the adaptation.

Regardless, the success of Orb: On the Movements of the Earth has undoubtedly boosted manga sales, giving the series the recognition it deserves. Meanwhile, the anime is nearing its conclusion, with the final episode set to air this weekend on March 15.
