Published by Gintoki on

Disability or a prolonged disorder sometimes becomes a part of human life, whether they want it or not. Fighting disability is pretty hard as it requires a lot of courage to compete in a world full of both physically & mentally capable enough people. However, there are certain anime characters with disabilities who break this stereotype and don’t let it stand in their way of living.

With a world occupied with the sheer number of people with disabilities, it is a common gesture to give some respect to them in the mainstream media as well and anime has done it brilliantly over the past couple of decades. Some anime tackle disability with fine distinction and specificity while, other anime are vaguer about it, but overall the characters who play the roles tell us valuable lessons about the social and emotional implications of disability.

And, in today’s article, we’ll take a look at some of the most badass anime characters with disabilities who don’t let their condition stand in their way. So, without any further ado let’s get started.

Despite being bound to a wheelchair, Ayase pilots the humanoid robot “Endlave”.

She’s proud of her condition, claiming that her wheelchair is what makes her unique and that her only real disability is dealing with other people’s ignorance. He didn’t even hesitate to take on the whole Joestar Group.

Although N’Doul is blind, he has phenomenally sharp hearing. He can determine the position of a fly simply by listening to it or hearing faint sounds hundreds of meters away from him. 8. Nicolas Brown (Deaf)

Gangsta is packed with a bunch of amazing personalities but Nicolas Brown is the only anime characters with disabilities in it. He is a former mercenary who works for Benriya, a group that does illegal odd jobs. Being a Twilight, he was born with exceptional strength, but was also born deaf. However, Nicolas never let his deafness get in the way of kicking some serious ass.

Deadly, perceptive, and surprisingly witty Nicolas uses sign language to communicate, and while he can speak, he’d rather be sassy through sign language and glares. The cadence of his voice reflects his inability to hear and if someone can’t communicate with him, he ignores them after all he has more important things to do.

7. Kaname Tōsen (Blind)

Kaname Tōsen was originally introduced as the captain of the 9th Division of the Gotei 13 until he betrayed Soul Society, alongside Sōsuke Aizen and Gin Ichimaru. Later on, Fujitora was conscripted through a World Military Draft during the two-year time skip, being appointed to the rank of Admiral for the marines. After multiple surgeries, he recovered the ability to perform his hero duties for a limited amount of time. But, as previously, All Might lost the capability to sustain his original form for a longer period. Once a certain time lapse passes, he reverts to his weakened form and starts coughing up blood. His missing arm never became a problem for Shanks even in a competitive world like One Piece and his reputation among other pirates is unreal despite the fact that fans know close to nothing about his strength and background.
