Top 10 Countries Where Anime Was Most Popular In 2023

Gone are the days when anime was watched behind closed doors and geeks were ridiculed for celebrating their love for Japanese animation. But, not anymore. Across continents, it has now become mainstream with some of the most-watched television shows being anime ones. And, among these nations, some have grown into anime addicts.

Out of almost 200 countries, there are ten nations which didn’t stop watching anime in 2023. The widespread popularity of anime is increasing at a rapid rate and these nations has played a major role in promoting anime with over half the population consuming the medium on a daily or weekly basis.

Unsurprisingly, the list is topped by Japan which is the heart of anime. With an extensive library of homegrown masterpieces and the constant influx of new releases every month, Japanese audiences continued to fuel their passion for anime in 2023 as 75% of the population tuned in to watch their favorite shows.

It’s no surprise that anime is taking over the West and United States has risen as the epicentre of it. With streaming companies like Netflix investing heavily in it and manga publishers like Kodansha and Shueisha setting their bases in the country, it’s just a matter of time before the US takes the first place.

The list of top 10 countries (according to % of the population that watch anime) where anime is most popular goes like this –

10. Taiwan – 32.5%

9. Canada – 34.6%

8. Malaysia – 42.7%

7. Mexico – 45.5%

6. South Korea – 50.7%

5. Brazil – 55.7%

4. France – 62.5%

3. Philippines – 70.5%

2. United States – 71.8%

1. Japan – 75.8%

Streaming platforms and conventions have played a pivotal role in fostering anime worldwide. As the list provided is based on viewers who watch anime on legal services, countries like Indonesia and India didn’t make it despite having massive anime fanbases as the majority of the fans residing there prefer pirated sites service.

China is also missing from the top 10 list because of several reasons with the two key ones being – the ban on popular anime shows by the government and strict regulations against Japanese culture. Yet it’s one of the largest consumers of anime just like several other nations where the demand for anime is growing.
