Akira Toriyama’s final work before his unfortunate passing, Dragon Ball DAIMA, has come to life thanks to the dedicated staff at TOEI Animation. The series has been a nostalgic journey for longtime fans, and to take it even further, the producers have brought back Goku’s coolest form—one that hasn’t been seen in decades.
Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 18, titled “Awakening,” just aired in Japan, finally introducing a canon version of Goku Super Saiyan 4 against King Gomah—the formerly pint-sized demon king who has received a serious upgrade from the all-powerful Evil Third Eye.
After being forced to unleash his trump card, Super Saiyan 3, Goku still made no progress. With all hope seemingly lost, Kakarot revealed one last ace up his sleeve—one that neither he nor the fans ever expected: the ultimate Super Saiyan 4.
Goku Super Saiyan 4 transformation first debuted in Dragon Ball GT back in 1997 in the episode “Goku’s Ascension.” However, since GT is non-canon, fans have long hoped for SSJ4 Goku to be officially integrated into the main storyline. Now, DAIMA has finally done what no one thought possible after 28 years.
Last year, DAIMA also made Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta canon in Episode 12, shocking fans with the transformation. However, according to Dragon Ball executive producer Akio Iyoku, this is just the tip of the iceberg—there’s still more to come for the anime franchise.
Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 18, featuring Goku Super Saiyan 4, is now streaming on Crunchyroll with both Japanese audio and English subtitles. The series has only two episodes left, with the final episode set to air on Friday, February 28.
