one piece manga ending in 3 months

Japanese manga artist, Eiichiro Oda published his first chapter of One Piece in 1997 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump. The manga is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and on this occasion, two manga legends Eiichiro Oda and Gosho Aoyama (Detective Conan) sat down together for a landmark joint interview where Oda hinted at One Piece ending in the next three years.

In the latest Eiichiro Oda x Gosho Aoyama interview, both authors shared their experiences regarding the serialization of their respective works. In reply to a question, Oda told Aoyama that his personal goal is to end the series in the next 3 years as the ending of the series is completely planned.

Oda quoted, “I’m not sure how many years it will take. I have answered this question so many times already I have lost credibility, so I don’t think I should answer”. He further added, “I shouldn’t really say this out loud, because so far I have been pretty off, but as of now it’s a three-year end goal”.

Besides, Oda also expressed his dissatisfaction with overly serious shonen manga and stated that he is intentionally trying to keep One Piece from following that trend. “Battle manga has to keep getting more and more serious to keep up with readers’ expectations and I honestly hate that. I definitely don’t want my work to become a serious manga like that”, One Piece creator added.

The lengthy joint interview between the two mangaka’s will be published in two installments across their respective serializing magazines. Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine will publish the first part on July 25, while Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday will publish the second part on July 27. However, you can read the transcription of the first part below:

Aoyama launched the Detective Conan manga in 1994 meanwhile, Oda began serializing the One Piece manga in 1997. Both the series are highly popular in the community and have inspired anime television adaptations which are still ongoing. Notably, each of them has published over 100 manga volumes as well which is a milestone in itself.

Despite drawing for rival publications, they respect each other a lot and last year Oda indicated his respect for Aoyama when he commented: “I’ve never met him, but he feels like a comrade in arms. I know how tough getting to 100 volumes is, Aoyama-san! Congrats on 100 volumes of Conan!” Oda is currently working on the final saga of the One Piece manga, with its first chapter currently scheduled for release on July 25.
