The world of anime is expanding rapidly, with streaming services striving to mainstream the medium among global audiences. While Japan remains the mecca of the anime industry, the country is now pushing boundaries by collaborating with China at the forefront.
In a recent meeting between Japan’s Takeshi Iwaya and China’s Wang Yi during the Second Japan-China High-Level People-to-People and Cultural Exchange Dialogue, officials from both nations agreed to co-produce more anime projects in future.
The two parties signed a 10-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cultural ties by encouraging co-productions of animation, dramas, and documentaries for broadcasting and distribution. They also agreed to address transparency issues related to Japanese content released in China.
Additionally, both nations plan to deepen exchanges in the film industry through reciprocal visits and enhance cooperation under the agreement. The goal is to foster healthy cultural relations while providing creators with the security needed to collaborate and innovate.
China, as one of the largest film markets globally, offers lucrative opportunities for Japanese studios. For example, Toei Animation’s “One Piece Film: Red” and “The First Slam Dunk” grossed an impressive $93 million in China in 2023, accounting for 33% of their worldwide earnings.
China could also benefit by leveraging Japan’s established global reach to introduce fans to its unique storytelling styles. Aniplex has played a significant role in bridging the gap, distributing titles like “Dragon Raja” and “Link Click”, produced by Chinese companies.
Ultimately, increased partnerships between China and Japan could lead to higher revenues, improved production quality, and better pay for industry staff. As this collaboration unfolds, fans can look forward to seeing groundbreaking works from both nations, elevating animation to new visual heights and surpassing current expectations.
