‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’ Grossed Over 1 Billion Yen To Become Highest Opening Anime Movie In 2021

The first-ever movie of the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise titled “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” has stunned the audience with its grand opening on the very first day of the premiere as Jujutsu Kaisen movie has become the highest opening anime movie in 2021 with an estimated box-office collection of 1 billion yen on its first day.

According to reports, the movie premiered theatrically at midnight in Japan on Dec 24 and more than 15,000 people attended the early screenings of the show. The film, produced by MAPPA and distributed by Toho, was released across 418 theatres including the IMAX screenings.

And the ticket sales numbers of the film is staggering as Jujutsu Kaisen 0 grossed over 1 billion yen (US $8.74 million) on the opening day of the theatrical release. With over 1 million attendees Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is now the second-highest-grossing anime movie on the first day. The top spot is taken by the “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” that earned a total of 1.2 billion yen on its opening day in 2020.

The most notable point is that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train was in continuity with the main story meanwhile, the Jujutsu Kaisen movie takes place one year before the current storyline. Moreover, at the time of Mugen Train release, there was no competition for it because of the pandemic but, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is competing against the likes of Hollywood biggies such as ‘Matrix: The Resurrection’ and ‘Spiderman: No Way Home’.

The film is based on the manga series ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’ written & illustrated by Gege Akutami. In the movie, Megumi Ogata is voicing the lead role of Yuta Okkotsu. The supporting cast includes Kana Hanazawa (Rika), Mikako Komatsu (Maki), Kōki Uchiyama (Inumaki), Tomokazu Seki (Panda), Yūichi Nakamura (Gojo) and Takahiro Sakurai (Geto).

Synopsis

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 follows the story of Yuta Okkotsu who gets possessed by the cursed spirit of his childhood friend, Rika. Unable to control Rika’s violent behavior, Yuta is helpless to stop the bloodshed that follows from her brutal vengeance.

As a result, Yuta wishes to be completely isolated so that no one else can get hurt. But, due to his extraordinary strength and immense cursed energy, Gojo Satoru enrolls him in Jujutsu Tech so that he can learn about the existence of cursed spirits and become used to his powers.

Now a first-year at this school, Yuta starts to learn Jujutsu arts and combat malignant spirits. Alongside his new classmates Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda, Yuta begins to find his place in the sorcerer’s world. However, very soon, Yuta comes to learn that the dangers of the Jujutsu world go far beyond that of evil spirits.
