Squid Game, the most talked about Netflix series nowadays has become a worldwide sensation. The popular Korean Drama is now one of Netflix’s biggest series in just two weeks. And what’s more interesting is that Squid Game is inspired by anime.
In a recent interview with the director & writer of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk he admitted the fact that anime helped him in creating a suspense-thriller story like Squid Game.
“I freely admit that I’ve had great inspiration from Japanese comics and animation over the years,” Hwang shared. “When I started, I was in financial straits myself and spent much time in cafes reading comics including Battle Royale and Liar Game.”
“I came to wonder how I’d feel if I took part in the games myself. but I found the games too complex, and for my own work focused instead on using kids’ games,” he continued.
If you’re not familiar with these two names then, Battle Royale is a survival-thriller manga series that tells the story of a student group who are forced to fight each other to the death.
Meanwhile, Liar Game is a psychological thriller anime that is about a college student, Nao who gets involved in a mysterious game called ‘Liar Game’ where players are urged to steal money from their fellow contestants by any means possible.
From the above two stories, it is clear that how deeply the story of Squid Game is influenced by anime. But, Squid Game hits different when it comes to impactful plot and the director knows it very well.
