Spider-Verse Star Speaks Out After Oscars 2024 Snub
The 96th Academy Awards brought joyous news for all anime fans across the globe following the announcement of the ‘Best Animated Feature’ category winner which went to Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and The Heron”. While the industry veterans congratulated the filmmaker for the win, the Spider-Verse star didn’t seem happy about it.
Shameik Moore, who plays protagonist Miles Morales in the Spider-Verse film franchise, tweeted “robbed” right after Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and The Heron snatched the award for ‘Best Animated Feature Film’ by beating 2023’s blockbuster hit “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” at Oscars 2024.
Following his tweet, fans called out the actor for being a “sore loser” and unprofessional. Moore later clarified his position, saying, “Respect to the winners. It’s true, I’m definitely a sore loser, but we didn’t lose, Spiderverse has impacted a lot of lives, we may not have been acknowledged tonight but life goes on, and BEYOND….. yea get ready”.
While Moore found it difficult to digest the loss, the producer and screenwriter of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Christopher Miller kept his spirits high despite going home empty-handed at this year’s Oscars. Taking to X, Miller penned, “Well, if you’re gonna lose, might as well lose to the GOAT”.
The category was filled with a wide variety of nominees this year, including “Nimona”, “Robot Dreams”, and Disney/Pixar’s “Elemental”. The Boy and The Heron ultimately won the award for ‘Best Animated Feature’, making it Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s second win at Oscar after 2001’s “Spirited Away”.
Released in 2023, The Boy and the Heron is a semi-autobiographical fantasy film that follows a young boy named Mahito who ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead in hopes of meeting his dead mother. The English dub of the film stars Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh, Willem Dafoe, Dave Bautista, and Christian Bale.
