Sui Ishida is one of the most recognized manga artists, who quickly rose to fame when Tokyo Ghoul was first published in 2011. With his mind-boggling art style and raw depiction of human emotions, Tokyo Ghoul became an irreplaceable pillar of 2010s pop culture. However, Ishida himself doesn’t consider the work a success.
In an interview with Animania and Manga Passion, Sui Ishida discussed about his work-life balance and ongoing series “Choujin X”. The artist shared intriguing insights about his new dark fantasy manga while reflecting on his first major hit, Tokyo Ghoul.
When the topic turned to Tokyo Ghoul, Ishida revealed that he doesn’t view the manga as a success, citing shortcomings in both its story and art. “As far as the premise is concerned, I don’t really consider Tokyo Ghoul a success,” Ishida stated.
“For me, success is when I feel like I drew something good. When I think about it, I don’t actually demand that it be well-received by society or that many people like it. Success for me is whether I can praise myself for it or not,” he explained.
Even though his debut manga became a highly profitable franchise, selling over 50 million copies worldwide, Ishida still struggles to recognize Tokyo Ghoul as the masterpiece it is—a work destined to be remembered for generations.
Currently, the mangaka is working on his new series, Choujin X, which follows childhood friends Tokio and Azuma. They live in a world divided between humans and “Choujins,” people with dangerous supernatural powers. After becoming Choujins themselves, they must navigate their place in both worlds.
