What are the odds that you receive extremely uncontrollable supernatural powers in the real world? Certainly, zero! But the main point is whether you’ll be able to handle it or not because with great powers comes great responsibilities. And, the fictional world of anime is swarming with such anime characters who can’t fully control their power because of their incapability to do so.
Whether one has psychic powers or magical abilities, sometimes even the classy superpowers in the anime world have a downside if the user can’t control them. Indeed the powers make the user extremely stronger and competent to win big fights but, occasionally these anime characters become a danger to themselves and others. For many of them, gaining control over their abilities is the most important thing in their lives.
And, in today’s article, we’ll take a look at some of these anime characters who can’t fully control their power at least until they master them. So, without any further ado let’s get started.
10. Noelle Silva from ‘Black Clover’
Noelle Silva comes from a royal bloodline of talented Magic Knights and possesses a large amount of magical power. But, Noelle just can’t hold herself together when it comes to her water magic. Despite, such a nobility she has a difficult time controlling it and her skills need a lot of polishing. Even when she first meets Asta and Magna, she loses control of her powers and creates a giant sphere of water which wreaks havoc in the area.
The impact was so strong that it can even shake the entire Seabed Temple. It was Noelle’s inability to control her magic which resulted in her being shunned by her elite royal family. Although, Noelle isn’t able to manipulate the water so perfectly but she’s certainly getting there and the impressive feats like her Sea Dragon are examples of it.
9. Tony Tony Chopper from ‘One Piece’
Chopper joined the crew of Luffy as a doctor who was initially an ordinary reindeer but gained the ability to transform into a human after eating the Human-Human Fruit. Though his human-reindeer hybrid form is not much of a problem and provides him with great intelligence still, it has its own consequences.
Sometimes, Chopper’s transformations are not within his control especially when he eats a special kind of drug called Rumble Balls to increase his fighting prowess. The overdose turns him into an uncontrollable monster that destroys everything around him and it was seen during his battle against Kumadori at Enies Lobby. Fortunately, Chopper has now gained a more firm bridle over his monstrous ability still it is lethal.
8. Tetsuo Shima from ‘Akira’
Akira was one of the most well-received sci-fi anime movies in the 1980s. One of its main characters, Tetsuo Shima started as an ordinary gang member but after a government agency kidnaps him and performs bizarre and unethical experiments on him, his life completely changed. He started developing psychic powers however, the one thing which he never developed was control over his newly found powers.
The powers granted to Tetsuo made him eventually one of the most powerful psychics ever, and also a vicious criminal. At first, he was frightened, but after acquiring the powers he totally lost his mind and started to go on a rampage. Before anyone can stop him, his body was completely overwhelmed by his abilities, causing him to attack the city and kill everyone in sight which eventually puts him on the list of anime heroes who turned into villains.
7. Rin Okumura from ‘Blue Exorcist’
Being the son of Satan comes with a fair share of baggage and for Rin Okumura, this was his destiny. Despite his hellish origin, Rin endeavors to live up to his human foster father’s teachings and strive to become an Exorcist. However, as the son of Satan, Rin has access to his father’s demonic flames which are sealed within the demon-slaying sword Kurikara and by unsheathing it, Rin can use the full power of his blue flames.
But, prolonged use of blue flames puts him at risk of being consumed by his own power. During his second confrontation with the Demon King Amaimon, Rin unleashes his flames to save his classmates. Unfortunately, his power overwhelms him, turning him feral and causing him to lash out and incinerate his surroundings. While Rin has taken steps to control this side of himself, there are times when he can’t.
6. Naofumi Iwatani from ‘Shield Hero’
Naofumi was summoned to another world to serve as the Shield Hero, one of the Four Legendary Heroes. After being falsely accused of sexual harassment, Naofumi took a different path in this bizarre world and tried to survive amid the demon outbreaks. As the representative of the shield hero, Naofumi acquired a lot of abilities during his venture.
While he managed to accumulate an impressive collection of shields during his brief time, there’s one that Naofumi is totally incapable of controlling, and that is the “Shield of Wrath”. When he uses this shield he can counter enemy attacks with an evil flame that creates burns however, he also gets consumed by the emotions of hate and rage which eventually corrupts Naofumi’s mind. So, he only uses it in extreme conditions.
5. Izuku Midoriya from ‘My Hero Academia’
Being the main protagonist of a popular shōnen series, the life of Midoriya has always been very odd. First, he was born with no powers in a world where 80% of the population has a special power called quirk. Later, he somehow inherited the powers from his superhero idol All Might, but eventually wasn’t able to constraint it making himself one of the few anime characters who can’t fully control their power.
Midoriya’s One For All quirk is not dangerous for others, but it surely has adverse effects on his body. He must be in peak physical condition to be instantly not crushed by it. Still, it’s no guarantee that his quirk will not turn his bones into pulp. Though his control increases with training, he tried his best to use his abilities by consistent practice and enduring severe pain every time.
4. Shizue Izawa from ‘Tensura’
Shizue Izawa, also known as just Shizu, was the companion of the previous Hero and a Japanese Summoned Otherworlder. She was also known as the “The Conqueror Of Flames,” an A+ ranked Adventurer of the Free Guild’s Headquarters. After being summoned from 1940s Japan to a magical world, Shizu is forcibly possessed by Ifrit, a fire demon.
This grants her the ability to use fire in combat, but she doesn’t always get a choice about how those powers are used. In possession of Ifrit, she’s forced to do things which she doesn’t want to do in the first place. Furthermore, Ifrit can sometimes take full control of her body, forcing her to transform into him and go on a rampage.
3. Broly from ‘Dragon Ball Super’
Broly is easily one of the most powerful mortal warriors in the multiverse, and one of the strongest in Universe 7. He is a true natural prodigy in combat, born with the genetics of the Legendary Super Saiyan and having said transformation ability. He is the latest of Universe 7’s Legendary Super Saiyans whose power level is said to exceed that of Prince Vegeta’s.
But, the most concerning thing about Broly’s limitless powers is his enraged state which is known as “Wrathful”. When Broly enters his wrath state, his power is multiplied by a factor of ten. However, the downside to the form is that it leaves the user unable to control their actions, causing them to lose any sense of themselves, leaving them feral. So, Broly wears a device around his neck to keep his wrath in control.
2. Saiki Kusuo from ‘Saiki K’
Saiki Kusuo is one of the most joyous and strongest introverted characters in the anime universe, but in general, he doesn’t like any of it. Being the inheritor of psychic power from a young age, Saiki possesses all kinds of abilities ranging from telekinesis to clairvoyance. However, the downside of his powers is that it’s extremely uncontrollable and can cause catastrophic events if precautions aren’t taken.
As a result, he has to wear special gloves if he doesn’t want to know the past of everything he touches, he wears special glasses to avoid turning everybody around him into stone and random objects explode when he sneezes. The two antennas on his head are for controlling his limitless powers so that he wouldn’t accidentally destroy the entire planet in his sleep. If none of the restrictions will be there, Saiki is like a walking atomic bomb.
1. Shigeo Kageyama from ‘Mob Psycho 100’
Shigeo Kageyama, best known as Mob, is one of the most silent & calm protagonists who rarely expresses himself. Despite his plain look, Mob was born with supernatural psychic powers which enabled him to do a variety of things. At a very young age, he learned that his powers were too strong to leave unchecked and would result in other people being harmed.
While he’s typically able to manage his abilities, they get out of control when he’s overwhelmed by negative emotions. When it happens, he loses his control and turns into a maniac destroying everything in his vision. He becomes so overpowered that taking him down is almost impossible which is why he must limit his powers as long as he can.
