Top 10 Weakest Main Characters In Anime
As a shōnen protagonist, what’s the first thing one should seek? Either physical strength or some sort of skill, right? To survive these are seemingly inevitable and must have abilities. However, some “so-called” heroes don’t have either of the powers ultimately being tagged as the weakest main characters in anime.
Regardless of the fact the protagonist is always a source of attention for their struggles, victories, and defeats, there are plenty of anime characters with little to no power of their own. And, in today’s article, we’ll take a look at some of the weakest protagonists in anime who hardly engage in a battle. Let’s get started then!
10. Koyomi Araragi – Monogatari
Koyomi Araragi is neither entirely human nor a vampire but he certainly does possess all the strengths and weaknesses that vampires are known to have, including immortality and regeneration. For a bit, it sounds like he’s quite strong but that’s not true!
Koyomi is really weak compared to all of the oddities he faces. Throughout the series, he has been humiliated countless times by the likes of Suruga’s monkey form and Nadeko’s snake. Koyomi is the type of guy who will find himself in trouble despite getting a power-up.
9. Mikado Ryūgamine – Durarara!!
The urban fantasy protagonist, Mikado Ryugamine is nothing like the other weakest main characters in anime. He is a natural leader who maintains a sense of order and justice in Ikebukuro, the city in which the series takes place. But, the problem is, that’s the only thing he’s got.
Mikado’s power solely relies on internet clout which makes him look miserable in front of the strong and skillful supporting cast. He’s good in his own way but as a part of the underworld, you need to have more than just connections. To be fair, anyone except him can be a better protagonist in Durarara!!
8. Subaru Natsuki – Re:Zero
The isekai genre is known for its unconventional ways of upgrading its protagonists in the other dimension. But, that’s not the case with Subaru! In fact, he is one of the weakest main characters in anime with no superhuman strength or intellect.
His only saving grace is his “Return by Death” ability which grants him the power to be revived again and again. Even his other abilities are all defensive in nature and fail to make him a strong fighter. Lucky him that all the women in his life are extremely powerful and are willing to put up with him.
7. Ganta Igarashi – Deadman Wonderland
Ganta is one of those characters who’re unlucky enough to be charged with a crime they didn’t commit. Adding more to his misery, he’s kept in the same prison as convicted trained killers with way stronger powers and extraordinary abilities.
The only way to survive in this prison is to kill or get killed and for a novice like Ganta this task seems tormenting. But, if the plot armor and strongest being in the series are both in your favor then there’s hardly any need to be strong!
6. Honoka Takamiya – Witch Craft Works
Not every story needs a strong hero – many great pieces rather tell about the weaknesses of a person rather than their strengths. Honoka Takamiya’s story is well fitting in this light. In a world full of witches, Honoka has poor grades, no physical strength or speed, and no real talents.
His only way of survival is a fire witch named Ayaka Kagari. Acting like a girl boss, she swoops in every time to protect Honoka from extreme dangers. If not for the sealed powers of Honoka, then he wouldn’t have been on the list of weakest main characters in anime.
5. Yukiteru Amano – Future Diary
If a character needs to be saved by an obsessed psychotic girl despite having the ability to see the future, what’s more pitiful than this! Yukiteru Amano isn’t the smartest, strongest, and most skillful in the series but he still does possess the most valuable item, the Future Diary.
Although the diary allows him to predict future events around him, it doesn’t grant Yuki any of the other necessities needed to survive, physical strength or any combat proficiency. That’s where Yuno comes into play to take care of the heavy lifting, doing everything she can to protect him.
4. Kazuma Sato – Konosuba
Kazuma Sato, a NEET teenager, is nothing sort of an overpowered reincarnated character. In fact, he’s an average adventurer who believes in living a normal life rather than confronting the Devil King. His power level is incredibly low which makes him come off as the weakest characters in anime.
Even an annoying character like Aqua is objectively a lot more powerful than him. Except for his good luck, Kazuma doesn’t have almost any power to speak of. But, there’s one thing in which he can’t be beaten i.e. the art of stealing panties!
3. Rito Yuki – To Love-Ru
Harem protagonist, Rito Yuki is an ordinary guy having no superhuman abilities of any kind. His minor talents include gardening, sports, and manga illustration. Like the majority of aggressively dull harem protagonists, Rito is a good-natured boy who constantly grabs girls’ private parts by accident.
Besides functionally living life as a sexual predator, Rito is engaged to an alien princess named Lala Satalin Deviluke. Being one of the strongest of any known race, Lala guards her fiance like a shield and performs her duty of protecting Rito from any potential threat on their planet.
2. Takemichi Hanagaki – Tokyo Revengers
As far as the list of weakest main characters in anime goes, Takemichi has the most upsetting role of all. He certainly doesn’t act the way a protagonist is expected and neither does he feel like one. The crybaby hero of the series is as good as a punching bag because he can’t deliver one.
Takemichi is the one who ends up getting saved by everybody else, even though that’s supposed to be his role as the protagonist. Takemichi is the epitome of disappointment as he doesn’t even have the mental fortitude to compensate for his lack of physical strength.
1. Leonardo Watch – Blood Blockade Battlefront
Leonardo is not your usual protagonist, thanks to his ocular powers of “All-seeing Eyes of God”. These powerful anime eyes allow him to predict the future, control other people’s vision, read minds, create hallucinations, and see the “truth” of the world. With a deadly set of abilities like that, what’s he doing on this list?
His weakness lies in his ocular strength as he’s unskilled with his abilities and ends up hurting himself while using his powers. To top it off, Leo is a pacifist meaning he tries to avoid combat as often as possible. Be it discovering someone’s intentions or simply being observant – this is where Leo shines.
