8 Anime Like Attack On Titan That Went Dark
When Attack On Titan first aired in 2013, no one expected it to be such a hit anime show. After 8 years, it is one of the most successful anime series. The show started on a very positive note and delivered every basic detail in a very efficient manner which amazed the audience.
But, as the series progressed it became darker and darker with the involvement of new characters and mysteries at every moment. And, the audience loves shows like this that progress with each episode.
So, in this article, we have come up with a list of some anime like Attack On Titan that went dark as the storyline proceeded further.
Let’s get started then.
Death Note
One of the most popular crime thriller anime Death Note is a top-tier show. There will not be a single fan who would have disliked this series. And, once you start this anime then leaving it in the middle is almost impossible!
Death Note began with a very fascinating story of a student who gets a notebook that grants him the power to exterminate anyone. In the beginning, Light used it in a very effective way and for a positive purpose.
But, as the show moved forward the killings became a challenge for Kira and his good looking motive turned into a race of becoming the supreme. Just like Attack On Titan, it went darker and darker, which was a real shock for the fans. And, that’s the reason the viewers never forget about Death Note.
Parasyte: The Maxim
The popular seinen anime series, Parasyte: The Maxim is well-known for its body horror theme and sci-fi elements. Just like AOT, it also features some abhor scenes that can be disturbing for anyone and because of this China banned this anime for the public.
Well, to be clear Parasyte was a dark anime series from the start and it was never meant to be for the delicate heart people. But, what was different about Parasyte is, it never degraded because of its storyline moreover, it evolved further with more intense and tense situations.
What Eren went through in Attack On Titan, Shinichi somehow had to go through the same and at a point, it became unbearable to watch these two. That’s the essence of both these amazing shows which a fan would never want to miss.
Hunter X Hunter
Hunter X Hunter broke the internet with its sequel debut in 2011. It entered the decade with pride and shocked all the anime fans around the world. Hunter X Hunter set the definition of shōnen anime series.
It made such a huge impact on people’s lives that they can never forget this series, even if they try to. Credit goes to the production house Madhouse as well for making this series a sensation through incredible direction and storytelling.
And who can forget the traumatizing Chimera Ant Arc of Hunter X Hunter that not just amazed but shooked the fans as well. Surviving a 50+ episodes long arc was not easy, but the fans somehow did it and made it out of that dark period.
The Promised Neverland
Proclaimed as one of the best anti-shonen anime series, The Promised Neverland is a treat to watch due to its intense moments and unexpected plot twists. The show is about an orphanage but, not a normal one.
Watching the first episode of The Promised Neverland is so peaceful and heartwarming as looking at the happy faces of orphan kids gives you relief. But, as the series moves further you get to realise it’s not that peaceful. And, in TPN the drama started from the very first episode.
A 12-episode show felt like a rollercoaster ride at each turn and exploration of the characters helped in building up an intense story.
Sadly, Season 2 of The Promised Neverland destroyed all the legacy of this series and gave us nothing in terms of entertainment. A good anime series turned into one of the worst anime series in no time.
Future Diary
Future Diary is a mix up of action and dark elements when a psychic girl goes beyond the limits for the sake of her love. There is much to explore in this series, but not without a bloodbath in each episode.
Yukiteru Amano, a lonely high school students life changes drastically when one day the god of time and space gives him a “Random Diary”, which enables him to foresee the future. Moreover, he is forced to participate in a survival game consisting of 11 other players with the same powers as him.
To make it out of alive, Yukiteru teams up with a psychopath girl, Yuno Gasai who ensures his safety and helps him in clearing the game. But, what Yukiteru doesn’t know is Yuno’s romantic craze about him.
Akame ga Kill!
Akame ga Kill! is also one such anime like Attack On Titan that went dark and gruesome with each episode. The dark fantasy action anime series premiered in 2014 and performed pretty well at that time.
Akame ga Kill! follows the story of a young villager who heads to the capital to raise some money. But somehow, he gets involved with an assassinating group called ‘Night Raids’ and begins hunting the evildoers with them.
Storyline and character build-up was good in this series, but as the show proceeded it turned into a nightmare as every episode was full of bloodshed. Due to the involvement of the government and the feelings of grudge & hatred, Akame ga Kill! then focused only on annihilating every single character.
This sounds cool but it’s more like witnessing a war where there can be only one survivor and no one wants to witness something like this.
Tokyo Ghoul
If someone asks you how hard it is to live a life other than normal, tell him the name of Ken Kaneki! Yes, the protagonist from one of the most notable works, Tokyo Ghoul.
Tokyo Ghoul is the best example of a dark shōnen anime series. What Attack On Titan did from the start, Tokyo Ghoul also illustrated that horrifying scenes from episode 1.
Kaneki’s transformation into a ghoul and eating humans to survive, only imagining these things is enough to give a chill in your entire body. Kaneki’s character is very similar to Eren, they both had to suffer mental torcher and depression in a very early stage of their childhood.
But, more than the good season 1 of Tokyo Ghoul, fans remember its other three seasons that were imposed upon them as a torcher. Even without having a well-written manga Tokyo Ghoul failed to impress the audience.
Fullmetal Alchemist
The most admired anime series of all time, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
is still the best anime on the MAL, even after 12 years and it deserves to be there.
Written & illustrated by one of the most notable female mangaka, Hiromu Arakawa, the manga got an anime adaptation in 2003 and in 2009, a sequel by Studio Bones titled ‘Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’ was premiered. It turned out to be a good move and was praised by many for its perfect storyline and well development of characters especially the female one’s.
Just like AOT, the show proceeded at a very good pace and at a point, the journey of Edward & Alphonse turned into hell. The fun looking alchemy can turn into a disaster as well, the viewers realised it after witnessing it with their own eyes. But, overall the series was a perfect ten on ten with an amazing plot backing up its dark theme.
