10. Tomo-chan Is A Girl
Tomo-chan Is a Girl is the type of anime that was much needed in the stale rom-com genre for a long time and upon arriving it worked its magic to craft a treasured supporting cast and numerous gags. The series primarily centers on Tomo Aizawa and her childhood friend Junichiro Kubota.
They’re “bros” in the truest sense, but Tomo has feelings for Junichiro and unfortunately for her, he only sees her as a guy. The story navigates Tomo’s relentless quest to communicate her feelings, letting the audience and Jun realize that she’s actually a girl, not a tomboy that everyone sees her to be.
9. Konosuba: An Explosion On This Wonderful World
One of the widely recognized comedy isekai series, Konosuba slid into the best anime of 2023 with its spin-off title that sees the backstory of Megumin and how she became quite the distinguished character of the franchise, from a nobody back in her Crimson Demons clan to an unhinged arch-wizard.
The anime is canon with the original story but is set one year before its events. Everything from the dialogue and banter to parodying of generic isekai is present in this spin-off yet the anime fails to match the vibe of the original. But it still manages to be compelling and Konosuba fans should be able to find some enjoyment in it.
8. NieR:Automata
Anime based on video games are normally hit or miss but luckily NieR:Automata represents itself in the most effective way possible, showing the inherent wonder that lies within. The series references several philosophies and explores themes of finding value in life and the reasons people kill.
Set during a proxy war between alien-created machines and human-crafted androids, the story follows the trials of combat android 2B, scanner android 9S, and rogue prototype A2. Alas, the anime adaptation could only achieve so much given the restrictions involved both in exploration and manpower.
7. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Adventure is not always about chasing a goal or accomplishing something grandiose instead it can be much more meaningful and enlightening. Frieren’s unique and moving premise does the same as it focuses on the titular character’s journey delving deep into philosophical themes rather than dwelling too much in the past.
The story chronicles Frieren, an elf mage who once shared a great adventure with Himmel the Hero and his group, but never realized how precious those moments were until they faded away. Years later, she embarks on a new journey, following the footsteps of her former companions and seeking to understand her own heart and the hearts of others.
6. Hell’s Paradise
Hell’s Paradise is a horror-fantasy adventure series set in the Edo period of Japan. Produced by Studio Mappa and acclaimed as one of the best modern shonen ninja anime of the new generation, the series stars an elite shinobi assassin named Gabimaru the Hollow.
Being captured during a mission, Gabimaru is sentenced to death but the Shogunate decides to send him and a slew of other notorious criminals to retrieve the “elixir of life” on a secluded island. What follows is a bloody battle royale between the participants for the sake of their freedom and survival.
5. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2
One Piece fans will surely not agree, but a major part of 2023 belongs to Jujutsu Kaisen. With the release of the much-awaited Shibuya Incident arc this year, the series has gone far past the normal bounds of anime and has become cinema in the purest sense of the word.
Several episodes of this season are listed as the best anime episodes of 2023 on IMDb, and nothing in the show so far even compares to how immaculately animated and choreographed the duals are. The soundtrack, direction, and action storyboard in Season 2 are second to none and it’ll take a huge deal to beat it.
4. Mushoku Tensei Season 2
Applauded for its coming-of-age story and well-written characters, Mushoku Tensei made a comeback this summer with a sequel that saw Rudeus’s mental battle and self-exploration, figuring out how to accept loss and move forward in order to not waste the second chance at life he’s been given.
This season almost completely hinges on character development and uses depression as a catalyst to make it much brood and bleaker than the previous installment. The odd amount of realism in the second season excels in ways other anime do not, which is the reason behind its appealing and poignant narrative.
3. Vinland Saga Season 2
Before calling it an underwhelming sequel, one should realize that the first season was only the prologue of this epic tale, and it’s Season 2 where the “real” story begins. In fact, the second season has much better animation, soundtrack, voice acting, and storyboard which is magnificent throughout the season.
Despite having a lot less action and more attention to the juxtaposition of two characters – Thorfinn and Canute – in this season, MAPPA stepped in for WIT and gave an absolute masterclass. Thanks to their impeccable direction and extra-added anime original content, the series received significant praise.
2. Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc
Demon Slayer Season 3 received a mixed bag of reviews for a couple of reasons, but thanks to Studio Ufotable’s continued efforts and a momentous final episode the season ended on a positive note. Tanjiro’s visit to the village and his confrontation with Upper Moon’s was closest to the quality of previous seasons.
The use of CGI might have been upsetting for some viewers, but the season had it all – action, humor, emotions. But the main takeaway of the Swordsmith Village arc was the amount of detailing and an incredible soundtrack that left fans with a stir of ecstasy that words can’t fully capture.
1. Oshi no Ko
Oshi no Ko is prodigious in its visual representation, and it can be seen in its feature film-length debut episode that took the internet by storm. From the beginning, the story takes its characters very seriously and puts emphasis on gravely exploring what it means to be a pop idol or be in the entertainment industry.
There’s a surge of several emotions while watching this anime as it has lots of ups and downs that can induce hatred, happiness, and sadness at the same time. Without any doubt, Oshi no Ko is an exceptional masterpiece of a debut series and deserves to be on the list of highest rated anime of 2023.
