why demon slayer is popular in japan

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a popular manga series written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotoge. It got an anime adaptation in 2019 which was later praised by many anime fans.

But, that is not the point of discussion here. The thing is its popularity level. The madness of the people of Japan towards this series.

We know the fact that Japan is the origin of anime and a variety of animanga comes out every day. But, why Demon Slayer made such a huge impact on their minds? Why this series was a huge success after its release?

A lot of people are curious to know about this. So, after scratching my mind and surfing through the internet I came up with this article.

What Demon Slayer Is About?

Anime Demon Slayer becomes Japan's top Grossing film

Just like any other Shonen anime, Demon Slayer’s story based on a very simple and kind guy, Tanjiro. He used to distribute coal from one village to another as a family business.

One day, he sets on a journey with the same workload and with an expectation that after doing the work he will get to spend some time with his family. But, his last wish demolished when a demon named Muzan Kibutsuji slaughter his entire family in a single scoop.

When Tanjiro comes to know about this incident, he gets shocked. His only happiness and beautiful moments were gone in a single night. He had nothing to regret.

But, his last hope was his little sister, Nezuko who was turned into a demon. So, Tanjiro decides to set on a journey with his sister and find a cure to turn her back into a human again.

Whether he will be able to do it or not, that can only be answered by watching the series.

What Makes Demon Slayer Series So Popular?

Demon Slayer The Big Three- Tanjiro, Inosuke and Zenitsu

Now, moving on to the main section. Demon Slayer is overrated, as depicted by many fans. But, is being overrated makes it so popular? The answer will be, No!!

Demon Slayer is not the first anime in the overhyped list, many others are included in this. But, it is indeed the first anime that caught the attention of so many Japanese fans in such a short time.

What’s the reason behind it? How is it possible? To know the answers, let’s dig deeper into the topic and find out the main aspects of this series.

1. Talks About The History Of Japan And Its Culture

Japanese Monsters, Ghosts, and Spirits: Mythical Yōkai (妖怪) at OSU Libraries | Japanese Collections

There are a ton of anime that do the same thing then why Demon Slayer is different from them? The reason is the Era in which its story is based, Taisho Era.

Most of the other anime were all based on Edo Era, which comes just before the Taisho Period. The creator very smartly picked a short period, Taisho, because it has a very deep influence on Japanese Culture.
In this way, he was able to deliver it to a large audience in a very effective way and a uniqueness in itself.

Coming to the second point, the scenery of purple flowers that are shown many times in the anime, is known as Wisteria flowers and it has a long connection to the history of Japan. Some call them, ‘Flowers of Death’.

Last but not least, the people of Japan believe in the Demon Concept in the same way just like Indians believe in Gods. They see them as divine spirits capable of wielding great powers. In Japan, the word ‘demon’ symbolizes anxiety and hope for society.

2. Showcases The Family Bonding

Kimetsu no Yaiba episode 1

It is seen to be very rare in any anime series nowadays.

Demon Slayer has done this job perfectly. The show has highlighted the bonding of Tanjiro and Nezuko very nicely. The love and affection shown between them attracts the audience towards the show and creates a sequence of emotional moments that touches the heart of the viewer.

Tanjiro’s grudge towards the murderer of his family and his desire to turn Nezuko back to normal shows his care and love towards his family.

It seems to be very natural and realistic which is rarely found to be in another anime and that’s why Kimetsu no Yaiba stands apart from others.

3. Work Of Ufotable

Demon Slayer and Ufotable studios

Everything on one side and Ufotable on the other. It will still be the dominant one.

After being amazed by its awesome animation I did some research on them and found a stunning fact, even you will be shocked after hearing this. According to the reports, Ufotable was in a heavy debt of around 4 billion yen before the making of Kimetsu No Yaiba.

Still, they handled the project. Any other studio would have dropped it or just animated it as a formality but they didn’t. Despite having such a massive financial debt on their head, they did Demon Slayer with perfection, beyond it may be the right thing to say.

Ufotable not just animated it they set a template for the other franchises as well and started a kind of revolution in the anime industry. A lot of newbies became a part of this community just because of KNY. It changed the perspective of an average viewer towards anime just like Hunter x Hunter did in 2011.

Gaining such a humongous fanbase in a very short time is almost impossible but Demon Slayer proved it and all credit goes to the miracle done by Ufotable.

4. Tanjiro In the Lead Role

Tanjiro Kamado popularity

The main character is always a talk of debate. No matter how cool or rude they look, they are always in limelight.

Luffy, Naruto, Ichigo, Eren, Goku, Light, all have done a great job for their franchises and every anime fan loves them. But, the question is, What makes Tanjiro so special? What makes him so admirable and appreciable in Japan?

Tanjiro’s calm and composed behavior attracts the audience. His sweet smile and kindness towards others leave an impact on the viewer. He was not just kind to the humans, he displayed the same sort of action towards the demons as well.

He respected their feelings and tried to understand their sufferings. The moment where he cuts a demon sitting on a stone without hurting her even a bit shows his concern towards others.

Throughout the anime, his innocence and simplicity gained praise from the fans. The credit goes to the voice actor, Natsuki Hanae, as well for making it possible and he deserves a round of applause for adding value to the character of Tanjiro.

Conclusion

The growth of Demon Slayer has amazed everyone, not just the anime community but the other entertainment sectors as well.

Those who weren’t aware of the anime culture are now trying to discover it. The young audience is attracted to it. All are talking about Japan and their culture and Demon Slayer has played a big role in doing this.

The way Demon Slayer Infinity Train shattered the box office records has shocked the entire world.

It is not just a coincidence, it is the result of the hard work of those who work behind the scenes and put their best effort to deliver the top class content to you. They are paid low but they still put their 100% because they work for the people, the fans, not for money.

So, keeping all things aside, thank all the staff members of the production house and the creator for providing us with such a brilliant piece of artwork and entertaining us to the extreme level.

Now, you know the secret behind demon slayer popularity and till now you are also willing to watch it, If you haven’t
