Top 10 Anime Characters With Heterochromia Or Dual Eye Colors
Have you ever stumbled upon a person with two different eye colors? Sounds unreal right, but it’s not! There is a genetic disorder primarily known as Heterochromia in which different-colored eyes are present in the same person. The disorder is very uncommon in humans however, in the fictional world anime characters with heterochromia are more common than one can imagine.
Heterochromia in humans appears either as a hereditary trait unassociated with other diseases, as a symptom of various syndromes, or as the result of a trauma. But, in the anime world characters with heterochromia, or different colored eyes, tend to have special abilities or even multiple personalities. Sometimes, the dual eye colors turn out to be the most striking aspects of their character design.
And, in today’s article, we’ll take a look at some of the best anime characters with heterochromia who stand out from the hurdle because of their striking different colored eyes. So without any further ado let’s get started.
10. Elizabeth Liones – Seven Deadly Sins
Elizabeth Liones is the third adoptive princess of the Kingdom of Liones and the 107th and current incarnation of the Goddess Elizabeth. Originally an alleged survivor of Danafor’s destruction, when Elizabeth first tapped into her Goddess powers at a young age, she noticed that one of her eyes changed, turning from its normal blue to a bright orange that marked her as a Goddess.
Without yet knowing the reason behind this change, she was left feeling alienated from the rest of her family. This led to her covering the right eye with her hair. She later became the Seven Deadly Sins’ prominent ally, participating in their battles against the Ten Commandments and later the Demon Clan in the New Holy War.
9. Mei Misaki – Another
Mei Misaki is the female protagonist of the well-known horror anime series, Another. She is a student of Class 3-3 at Yomiyama North Middle School and was labeled by her classmates as “the one that does not exist.” While Mei’s right eye is a deep shade of scarlet red, her left eye is green in color which she keeps hidden behind an eye patch.
Her eyes were originally red, however, the reason behind her mismatched irises is that her left eye is prosthetic; a doll’s eye. The eye was a gift from her mother, who made her the glass eye after Mei lost her real eye due to disease when she was four. Mei keeps it hidden because she feels insecure about her de-facto heterochromia.
8. Isaac Foster – Angels of Death
Isaac Foster, commonly known as Zack is the second major character in the anime, Angels of Death. He first appears as an enemy of the B6 floor when meeting Rachel Gardner, and then becomes an ally over the course of the game. Zack is professionally a serial killer who is currently on the run due to his connections with recent murder cases.
The outer appearance of Zack is pretty lame as his whole body is covered in bandages which are used to hide his burned skin. Besides, he has Anisocoria, a condition in which the eyes are unequally dilated, making his left eye appear light brown and his right eye light orange. He also has a combat knife, which was his main weapon before he came across the scythe.
7. Obanai Iguro – Demon Slayer
The Serpent Hashira, Obanai Iguro is also one of the few anime characters with heterochromia. His right eye is golden-yellow and his left eye is turquoise. Obanai’s eyes stand out from the rest of the Demon Slayer Corps and are certainly striking in comparison to his attire, mainly consisting of only black and white with very basic patterns.
Furthermore, it has been revealed that Obanai is more or less blind in his right eye, meaning he ascended to the highest rank like Hashira with one functioning eye. Thanks to his pet serpent, Kaburamaru who serves as his right eye and possesses a unique ability which allows him to read and predict a target’s attacks and then relay that information to Obanai
6. Seijuro Akashi – Kuroko’s Basketball
One of the most striking aspects of Seijuro Akashi is his leadership quality and dual eye colors. However, unlike other anime characters with heterochromia, Akashi’s eyes color change based on his personality: in his normal self, both his eyes are red-maroon, whereas the “other” Akashi has heterochromatic eyes, with the right eye being red and the left being orange.
Akashi developed a split personality that twists on the original personality. He deeply feared abandonment, so the other one essentially acted as a “protector.” This personality showed extreme hubris and does not tolerate those that belittle him or defy him, however, the real Akashi is kind-hearted and respectful.
5. Lelouch Lamperouge – Code Geass
Lelouch was a brilliant high school student until he met C.C. and acquired the powers of Geass. Initially, Lelouch has violet eyes however, when his Geass is invoked his left eye glows red, and the Geass sigil manifests inside when the ability is activated. Geass grants Lelouch the ability to control people’s minds, but only once certain conditions are met.
Eventually, he ends up using this ability to subjugate his enemies and establish himself as a supreme leader. But in order to use it, making eye contact with the opponent is a must. Initially, Lelouch was able to activate it at will however, he lost control of his Geass as it turned out to be more powerful. And soon, his Geass became permanently activated in both eyes.
4. Ciel Phantomhive – Black Butler
Ciel Phantomhive, the current head of the Phantomhive family bears a symbol on his right eye. The symbol is because of Ciel’s Faustian Contract – an agreement he made with Sebastian wherein the latter became his servant in exchange for ultimately receiving the former’s soul. When a deal is made, a seal is placed on the body of the human so that the user cannot escape.
In Ciel’s case, it was placed in his right eye however, the marked eye doesn’t really have a power of its own. While his left eye is rich peacock-blue, his right eye is pitch black with a pentagram branding that glows bright purple. And, as a matter of fact, Ciel usually covers his eye to keep the Faustian contract and his true intentions secret.
3. Shoto Todoroki – My Hero Academia
Shoto Todoroki is a socially awkward character and is a literal reflection of his overall personality. Unlike other heroes, Shoto has half-white and half-red hair which is a result of his parents’ combination of a fire quirk and an ice quirk. And, to go along with the rest of his half-and-half appearance, Shoto has heterochromia iridium.
Shoto’s right eye is brownish dark grey, while his left eye appears bright turquoise blue. Being the only child who inherited both Endeavor and Rei’s quirks, Shoto is a hybrid and uses an incredibly powerful quirk, Half-Hot and Half-Cold which eventually makes him one of the toughest heroes of the series.
2. Ken Kaneki – Tokyo Ghoul
Tokyo Ghoul is one of the well-known and also, most criticized anime at the same time but it doesn’t change the fact that when it comes to anime characters with heterochromia then Kaneki is certainly one of the most popular ones. After becoming a half-ghoul, Kaneki’s left eye turned pitch black and his pupil appeared bright red however, his other eye remained a dark grey.
Furthermore, fans saw a major glow-up in Kaneki’s personality. By the time he hit twenty’s, he seemed like a completely different person, physically and mentally. He went from a simp to a hot and handsome man that would make all the girls rejoice at the sight of his face. Upon adopting his ghoulish side and putting on blackish white hair color, Kaneki’s appearance changed drastically and so did his physical strength.
1. Kakashi Hatake – Naruto
Kakashi Hatake, famed as Kakashi of the Sharingan, is one of Konoha’s most talented ninjas. Despite his personal dislike of responsibility, he served as the mentor for Team 7 which includes Naruto, Sasuke & Sakura. While Kakashi’s right eye is a dull shade of gray, his left iris is red with black dots which basically holds his true power, the Sharingan eye.
But, he did not always possess the Sharingan. During the Third Shinobi World War, Kakashi was badly injured and his eye was damaged, resulting in a scar over his left eye. As a result, his original eye was removed and replaced with the Sharingan eye of his childhood friend, Obito Uchiha. As a matter of fact, Kakashi covers his left eye with his Hidden Leaf Village headband.
